A new exhibition by Polish photographer Darek Fortas looks behind the scenes of famous theatres.
The Dublin-based show takes the word “skene”, which means a “structure that supports the background in theatre as well as seeing and exposing”, as a starting point. It presents Fortas’s work from the past year, dedicated to the overlooked material structures that lay the foundation for each performance.
Fortas, who is based between London and Dublin, is known for an investigative mode of photography that he combines with a studio practice. His previous work has looked back at the political history of Poland from the Silesian coal mining industry in Changing Rooms and Coal Story, to the remaining infrastructure of Nazi concentration camps in Destructure.
Skene opens today and will run until 22 October at RUA RED in Dublin.
