Russian-German film scoops prestigious award at Venice

13 September 2016

Russian director Andrey Konchalovsky’s Paradise (2016) has won the Silver Lion award for Best Director at the Venice International Film Festival.

The Russian-German co-production centres on the relationship between an inmate and an officer at a concentration camp during the Holocaust. Prominent film critic Alberto Barbera dubbed the film “genius” and “even better” than Konchalovsky’s previous work The Postman’s White Nights, which took home the Silver Lion in 2014.

Paradise shared award with The Untamed, a Mexican horror film directed by Amat Escalante. The festival’s top prize – the Golden Lion – went to the Filipino title The Woman Who Left, which was directed by Lav Diaz.
