Choreography academy launches in Astana — the first of its kind in Central Asia

The Kazakh National Academy of Choreography has opened in the capital Astana — the first institution of its kind in Central Asia.

The Academy, which caters for all levels, aims to prepare students for building successful careers in ballet.

“The Kazakh traditions will be developed, as well as new approaches in performance. [...] I am convinced that the academy will be one of the leading centres for ballet and dance masters in the whole region of Eurasia in the future,” said President Nursultan Nazarbayev at the official ceremony on 31 August.

While a significant foothold for Kazakhstan in the international world of dance, the management see the Academy as crucial on the national level, particularly in terms of patriotic sentiment.

“It is important for us to raise not only highly professional artists, educators and art historians, but true patriots of the country and people who understand the value of art and culture,” said Academy Rector Altynai Assylmuratova.

The academy has already signed agreements on collaboration and exchange with the Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film Georgian State University, Belarusian State University of Culture and Arts, Moscow State Academy of Choreography, Astana Opera House, Astana Ballet, and Kazakh National Museum.
