Albania chooses Chromium for Oscars

19 September 2016

Albania has selected Chromium (2015), a coming-of-age drama by Bujar Alimani, as its entry for the foreign-language film category at the 89th Academy Awards.

Chromium centres on 15-year-old Adi, who goes to work illegally in a chromium mine in order to gain some independence from his mute mother, not realising the impact of his decision on the entire family.

The Albania-Germany-Greece-Kosovo co-production had its debut at Karlovy Vary in 2015 and is Alimani’s second film to be Albania’s submission for the foreign-language film category at the Oscars – his last feature Amnesty was submitted in 2011.

Could Chromium get Albania onto the shortlist for the first time?
