Slovenia’s Guild of Directors has submitted Houston, We Have a Problem! by director Žiga Virc as its entry for the foreign-language film category at the 89th Academy Awards.
The film brings together archival footage and fictional scenes, creating what the director calls a “docu-fiction”. The plot follows “the symbolic story of the rise and fall of Yugoslavia”, centering on the concept of the breakup of Yugoslavia being triggered by a CIA plot after Tito fails to deliver on a deal sell a secret space programme to the USA. In its fusion of fact and fiction, the HBO Europe-produced film Houston, We Have a Problem! provides a fascinating exploration of myth-making and cautions against taking documentaries at face value as truth.
Could this be Slovenia’s first film to be shortlisted for the foreign-language film category at the Oscars?
