Kyrgyzstan, Montenegro and Poland enter the Oscars race

Kyrgyzstan, Montenegro and Poland have entered the race for the 89th Academy Awards, selecting their submissions for the foreign-language film category.

Kyrgyzstan has chosen A Father’s Will, a comedy and the first feature film from directors Bakyt Mukul and Dastan Zhapar Uulu. The film follows the story of a man who returns to Kyrgyzstan following the death of his father after 15 years in the USA, leading him to rediscover his native country.

Montenegro’s submission, The Black Pin by by first-time feature director Ivan Marinović, also centres on a return – an orthodox priest goes back to his village in Montenegro to look after his ill mother.

Celebrated director Andrzej Wajda’s Afterimage will be Poland’s entry, in which an artist suffers persecution by Communist-era authorities. Afterimage will be the ninth film by Wajda to be submitted by Poland in the foreign-language film category. Four of his previous eight submissions have made the shortlist – will this be the first to win?
