The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) has expressed deep concern over an increase in threats towards journalists in Croatia, demanding an investigation into the incidents and action to improve the protection of journalists in the country.
The EFJ stated yesterday that it was “deeply concerned by the increase of hate speech and direct threats towards journalists in Croatia while impunity remains rampant”, asserting that in response, “an alert will be submitted to the platform of the Council of Europe for the protection of journalism and the safety of journalists”.
Together with the Croatian Journalists’ Association (HND), the EFJ is also “calling on the authorities to investigate and adequately respond” to a recent incident involving the HND president Saša Leković.
Last week Mr Leković found two screws in one of the front wheels of his car, which almost caused him to have a road accident.
According to the HND, this incident demonstrates that just “a small step” stands between threats of physical violence and real assassination attempts.
