The Mixtape 39: Maksim Panfilov

20 December 2016
Maksim Panfilov might not be a familiar name to most people, but the DJ and avid vinyl collector is one of the unsung heroes of the Russian underground sound. Panfilov hails from the Russian capital where he is resident DJ at NII club, but has been a regular on the party scene here since the 90s. Today you’ll be sure to find him and his eclectic collection of records gracing the decks at Moscow’s favourite night spot Rabitza, as well as Stackenschneider, Mosaique and Mishka in his second home St Petersburg, among others. His mixtape for The Calvert Journal, is an expedition across borders and genres, starting with spine-tingling interstellar synths and coming down to earth with hazy house and jazz-tinged, downtempo electronica. “Different styles, years and countries are all woven together in this mix. It also features tracks from local tastemakers — Alexander Weedheart, Caapi, Is My Lover, Untitled Gear, Flaty, Wax Paper Cup,” Panfilov says.
