You probably know acclaimed Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa for his recent films Maidan (2014), The Event (2015), and Austerlitz (2016) — now online cinema club Mubi is presenting the filmmaker’s early documentaries in a special programme, “Film is a Theorem”.
Documentaries featured in the programme include Loznitsa’s first feature-length film The Settlement (2002), an observation of the relationship between a group of mentally ill patients and nature, and his 2006 work Blockade, which explores the siege of Leningrad during the Second World War through archival material.
