When 22-year-old Dimash Kudaibergen entered Chinese TV singing competition Singer 2017, he probably expected to get some welcome press coverage. He may not have bargained for the huge media storm that would surround him within minutes of his first performance.
The Kazakh native performed the French classic SOS d’un terrien en détresse during the show’s first episode on 21 January, gaining the top score among the contestants.
The following days saw Kudaibergen all over the Chinese press, with such sensational headlines as “China is shocked by Kazakhs” (XinjiangNet), as well trending throughout social media.
Singer 2017 will run until 22 April — will the series soon have its first Kazakh winner?
