Our photo of the week was taken on a neglected island named Adata on the Martisa River in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Many see the island as nothing more than a wasteland. Not Sofia-based photographer Yana Lozeva, who uses it as the starting point for her series Adata.
“Many of Plovdiv’s citizens don’t even know it exists. Others have heard of it but don’t know it’s reachable by foot. Before the Balkan War Adata was frequently visited for picnics and fairs,” she describes, adding that its main function today is as a refuge for those marginalised by society.
To best document this little known space, Lozeva turned her lens to the litter — such as plastic bags — found around the island, the bright colours of which recall the festivities that once occurred here.
