Tbilisi to go green by 2030

Tbilisi City Hall has announced a new Green City Action Plan to transform the Georgian capital into a Green City by 2030. According to Irakli Lekvinadze, the deputy mayor of Tbilisi, the Green City Action Plan will be implemented across transport, environmental and energy platforms.

According to the deputy mayor, certain plans have already got underway with regards to greener transport solutions, including the introduction of MAN hybrid buses and the installation of more chargers for electric cars, with plans to import more electric cars as taxis over the next decade.

Lekvinadze also outlined plans to regulate the high rate of construction in Tbilisi, which significantly increases the city’s carbon emissions. Speaking with Georgian Journal, the deputy mayor stated his eagerness to “support constructions with energy efficient technologies”. In addition, Tbilisi City Hall have announced plans to build energy efficient houses, with certain private companies already stating their interest.

In light of Tbilisi’s growing reputation as a tourist hotspot, this recent announcement will most likely reinforce this new found identity, and ultimately drive growth in the area.
