Je suis Maidan: anonymous Russian website reveals protesters’ identities

“Give up hope — we’ll find you, too!” reads a message on the homepage of Je Suis Maidan, an anonymous Russian site working to expose the identities of of protesters who took part in unsanctioned rallies against corruption in cities across Russia on 12 June.

Using the controversial FindFace app to link photos of protesters to their social media profiles and full names, Je Suis Maidan has so far outed around 75 people who took part in demonstrations organised by opposition leader Alexei Navalny in Moscow, along with hundreds of others who protested in other Russian cities. The page features images of the protesters, their full names and links to their profiles on Russian social media site VKontakte.

According to a report by Riga-based news site Meduza, those found to have attended unsanctioned rallies risk being detained by police, losing their jobs or being expelled from university.
