Check out plans for the upcoming Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art

The architects behind Riga’s upcoming Museum of Contemporary Art have released sketch designs for what is set to become one of the hottest art destinations in the Baltics.

Last June it was announced that London-based architecture practice Adjaye Associates had been selected to design the museum together with local Latvian studio AB3D.

The firm proposed to reference the traditional wooden houses characteristic of the Baltic region with a building featuring an angular roofscape. According to the team behind the plans, the tilted roofs will feature north-facing glazing, “so that the pure northern light is sculpted into intimate or larger gallery environments”.

“This museum will be a beacon that both celebrates Latvia’s incredible artistic legacy and meaningfully links the country to the international art community,” said Adjaye Associates founder David Adjaye.

In addition to gallery space, the building is also set to boast a 200-seat auditorium, as well as educational spaces, a reading room and café.

According to a report by LSM.lv, more than 20 companies from Latvia, along with Finland, Estonia, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, are participating in the construction of the museum, which is scheduled to open to the public in November 2021.
