The winners of this year’s awards were announced on 30 September at a ceremony which — coincidentally — took place in St Petersburg.

The city was also shortlisted for Leading European City-break Destination and Leading European Cruise Destination, but failed to make an impression in those categories. Among the big winners this year was Portugal, with Portuguese companies and resorts picking up awards in 18 nominations, including the top prize of Leading Destination.

St Petersburg had previously won the World Travel Award for Europe’s Leading Destination in 2015 and 2016, and World’s Leading Cultural City Destination in 2016.
