Established in 2002 as an American outpost for the Art Basel brand, the Miami Beach Art Fair is the highlight of the December art calender.
Over 250 galleries are set to exhibit work, bringing together an expected 700,000 visitors, coillectors and gallerists to enjoy the winter sun.
The Calvert Journal took a look at some of the New East artists who survived the gruelling week-long selection process to exhibit in Florida this year.
Jakub Julian Ziółkowski
Jakub Julian Ziółkowski is a Polish-born painter and sculptor. He now lives and works in Kraków, creating pieces which blend surrealism, expressionism, abstraction, constructivism, and cubism. Miami collectors attending the fair will have their chance to snap up Master Clock, celebrating the grotesque in the human body.
Monika Sosnowska
Warsaw-based Monika Sosnowska uses industrial materials to explore the concept of space. Inspired by Poland’s modernist architecture, her sculptures of twisted steel are painstakingly designed to fit specific dimensions.
Eva Kotatkova
Prague-native Eva Koratkova uses a wide range of mediums to explore ideas such as exclusion, social norms, and the Czech Republic’s socialist past. Her work at the Miami Beach fair comes from her series Unlearning the body, which embraced collage as a form of reconstruction and reclamation.
Michał Budny
Bundy will be several exhibiting pieces at the Miami Art Basel, including a piece from his recent exhibition, The Song of the Skull. With its polished metal prongs, Bundy’s sculpture plays into the idea that the empty skull is a resonator: a storage device or receiver for different vibrations. Originally born in the Polish town of Lezsno, Bundy now splits his time between Warsaw and Prague.
Pawel Althamer
Polish artist Pawel Althamer often combines his work with evocative political messages. Among the pieces he’ll be exhibiting in Miami is Tramp: just one of the socially motivated sculptures that the artist has completed in recent years.
Marina Abramovic
Born in Belgrade, legendary performance artist Marina Abramovic is famed for her feats of endurance. While her performances can only be caught live, two lithgraphs will be on sale in Miami: Holding the Skeleton and Portrait with Golden Mask.
