Poland’s spectacular Szczecin Summer theatre is set to be transformed after the country’s officials approved new redevelopment plans.
London architect firm Flanagan Lawrence says the new designs will “enhance and protect” the acoustics of the striking 1976 amphitheatre, which can seat up to 2,500 people.
A new roof made of inflated fabric panels will be placed over the theatre’s existing concrete arch, supported by a separate curved truss. Two additional trusses will span the stage to support a lighting rig.
The project has already attracted controversy, with estimated costs already doubling to $7.08 million (£5.08 million). The deadline for the building — which had been due for completion early this year — has also been pushed back to the beginning of 2020.
