Berlin competition 2018: DOVLATOV by Aleksey German Jr. from Silversalt PR on Vimeo.
With fake news and political meddling firmly stuck at the top of the global agenda, it’s no surprise that Aleksey German Jr’s upcoming biopic Dovlatov is already sparking plenty of hype on this year’s film festival circuit.
Set to premiere at this year’s Berlinale, the film follows the life of Soviet writer and journalist Sergei Dovlatov as he struggles to navigate censorship and party politics in 1970s Russia. Dovlatov, who emigrated to New York in 1979, eventually became one of Russia’s best loved authors – but only after his death in 1990, and the fall of the Soviet Union. The film, which is a joint Russian, Polish and Serbian production, stars Belgrade-born actor Milan Marić in the title role.
The movie’s latest international trailer follows a festival teaser earlier this year, and shows Dovlatov’s desperate attempts to fight against the Soviet system.
Dovlatov will be screened at the Berlin International Film Festival on 17 February.
