Bollywood film producers have agreed to set a new film in one of Kazakhstan’s historic beauty spots, local officials have announced.
The movie will take place in the country’s southern region of Mangistau, home to the ancient Seisem Ata necropolis and Ustyurt nature reserve.
“We made prior agreements with Bollywood on shooting a movie about the Mangistau region,” announced Mangistau Governor Yeraly Tugzhanov, who reportedly pitched the film directly to production companies across the globe. “I think it is a splendid place that has no analogues.”.
As well as the Seisem Ata necropolis, a cluster of ancient mausoleums made from pink limestone, the Mangistau region also boasts 40 underground mosques dating back to the ninth century, 19 of which still function today.
The movie isn’t the first joint-project for Kazakh and Indian filmmakers. Love U Family, a film about a young Indian woman rebuilds her life Almaty after a disasterous divorce, was shot in Kazakhstan and India in 2017.
