Don’t miss the art project bringing post-Soviet style to Brixton Market

Shoppers at London’s Brixton Market will get the chance to immerse themselves in New East street culture with a one-off art project transforming the area from hipster shopping spot to a 1990s Russian clothes market.

The RЫNOK [MARKET] pop-up stall will appear in Brixton on Saturday 28 April from 12pm until 3pm, with Russian and eastern European clothes from the 1980s and 1990s.

Visitors won’t be able to buy the vintage clothes — all of which have been sourced from family collections — but they will be able to try on pieces, interact with stall holders, and sample street food from the era.

“The aim of this event is to introduce and explore the cultural legacy of eastern Europe”, says organiser Jekaterina Mirmanova, a Fashion Styling and Production student at the London College of Fashion.

“All the garments I’m using for this project are taken from my family archive,” she says. “One of my grandmothers lost her job as a head of a chemical laboratory when the Soviet Union collapsed and she started to sell second-hand clothes at a local market. This summer, I finally had chance to explore her “warehouse”, giving me the idea for the project.”
