Lily Idov photographs magical world of Moscow's lesser known museums

28 June 2013

Photographer Lily Idov’s debut exhibition on the magical world of Moscow’s lesser known museums goes on show at Triumph Gallery today. The 50 large-scale photos that make up Relics capture the artefacts and ephemera of the past in more than 20 museums that include Museum of Electrification, the Museum of Darwin, the Railway Museum and the Museum of Water Supply.

These collections, often housed in archaic exhibition spaces and old-fashioned glass cases, are rarely visited by the capital’s beau monde. Yet, through her photographs Idov questions our understanding of art. What, for example, is the difference between a stuffed shark in a zoological museum and the works of Damien Hirst? The exhibition will run until 10 July.
