Market forces: Anna Skladmann photographs Russia’s street sellers

London-based photographer Anna Skladmann is known for her beautifully shot portraits of people from every level of Russian society. Here she shares for the first time images from an on-going project that documents market vendors and their stalls in Moscow and in the outskirts of the city. Skladmann uses the same face-on, lushly lit style for all her portraits, whether the subjects are oligarch’s children or butchers, striving to create an objective cross-section of Russian society that captures people in the detail-rich spaces that define them. “It takes a long time to set up the lighting and the shot,” says Skladmann. “This helps people relax, and turns it into something of a performance. It’s not a snapshot.”
