Field of dreams: sporting life at Moscow State University
Sport features heavily in Russian culture and nowhere more so than in the education system where training one's body is seen as important as formal education. Moscow State University is just one institution that follows this philosophy, offering its students the opportunity to take part in numerous sporting activities. In an album shot exclusively for The Calvert Journal photographer Anastasia Korosteleva ventures into the university for a series of images that play with light and shadow to captivating effect. “I was attracted by their youthful energy and at the same time the solid Soviet architecture,” says Korosteleva, who earlier this year won the annual D&AD photography competition for her portraits of contemporary youth. “Being a big sports fan, I was amazed by this harmonious world. Surrounded by these unchanging historical buildings is a new generation who are enjoying sport with genuine enthusiasm.”
