Spiritualised: Gosha Rubchinskiy photographs St Petersburg’s skate scene
In 2011, Gosha Rubchinskiy, one of Moscow’s most sought-after conceptual fashion designers, headed to St Petersburg to launch Transfiguration, a multidimensional project comprising an art gallery, a photography workshop and a skateboard park. One of the results was a book of photography, also named Transfiguration, in which Rubchinskiy skilfully juxtaposes images of skater boys with religious symbols. As with his other work, the photographs serve as a thoughtful commentary on the gap between the post-Soviet skating subculture that has emerged in the suburbs of cities such as St Petersburg's and Moscow, and the more traditional elements of Russian society. For this gallery, Rubchinskiy has selected a series of images from the book especially for The Calvert Journal.
