Spiritualised: Gosha Rubchinskiy photographs St Petersburg’s skate scene

In 2011, Gosha Rubchinskiy, one of Moscow’s most sought-after conceptual fashion designers, headed to St Petersburg to launch Transfiguration, a multidimensional project comprising an art gallery, a photography workshop and a skateboard park. One of the results was a book of photography, also named Transfiguration, in which Rubchinskiy skilfully juxtaposes images of skater boys with religious symbols. As with his other work, the photographs serve as a thoughtful commentary on the gap between the post-Soviet skating subculture that has emerged in the suburbs of cities such as St Petersburg's and Moscow, and the more traditional elements of Russian society.
