Outsider fashion: the strange attraction of Moscow’s suburbs
The Moscow suburbs, grim and filled with rows of identical concrete blocks of flats, have in recent years become the source of inspiration for a new generation of creatives looking to distance themselves from the glitz and glamour associated with the capital. Through their work, the likes of fashion designer Artur Lomakin and artist Gosha Rubchinskiy endeavour to capture the grittier and more urban type of beauty that characterises the suburbs. In this series of photos, shot exclusively for The Calvert Journal, photographer Masha Demianova provides an insight into Moscow's alternative youth culture. “Essentially it’s a self-portrait but idealised,” says Demianova who took the photos in her apartment in Zyablikovo, one of Moscow’s most southern suburbs. “Creating something is always sublimation.”
