Hide from the modern world with this futuristic privacy capsule

Faced with a never-ending barrage of alerts, alarms and notifications, more millennials are seeking shelter from the modern world.

Ukrainian designer Volodymyr Dereznichenko’s has created a chair where users can snatch a moment of precious solitude and take time out from today’s information overload. There’s also an option to use a circular blind, which unfurls like a fan, to separate the user completely from their outside environment.

The pod has its own light and speaker in order to let each individual tailor the space to their own needs, whether taking a nap or listening to music. There is also a charging space for a phone or laptop — although noticeably outside of the capsule itself.

Based in Japan, Dereznichenko took his inspiration from the original design of Tokyo’s famous Nakagin Capsule Tower, where he worked to renovate one the rooms. The capsule’s snug padded interior has a diameter of 1.3 metres, the same as the tower’s circular windows.

He says that the capsule is a way to take a much-needed breather from our quick-paced, consumer-driven society.

“In our rapidly changing world, extreme introversion may be the pushback [we need] in order not to be overwhelmed,” he says.
