Form over function: the new abstract chair inspired by Kandinsky

21 March 2018

An up-and-coming Korean designer has created a piece of abstract furniture inspired by Russian avant-garde artist Wassily Kandinsky.

WoongKi Ryu, a student at South Korea’s Hongik University, used solid hardwoods — maple, walnut, cherry — to create the chair as well as steel and fabric.

With its bold geometric shapes and playful use of colourful accents, the final design draws heavily on Kandinsky’s Composition VIII, putting form over function for a showstopping centrepiece.
