Dance inside the ancient Georgian fortress getting ready to hold its first ever rave

Georgian party-goers are set to descend on the county’s Petra Fortress for a one-night music festival based inside the ancient ruins.

Artists including Kavei, Giorgi Devadze, ORIO, ZAPA, NEWA, and Fabrizio Lapiana will take to the stage at Georgian Rave Fest on August 10.

Organisers say they want to breathe new life into Georgia’s historic landmarks by throwing open the doors to the country’s subversive take on modern electronica.

“The younger generation [have] managed to create techno as a voice of resistance,” they told The Calvert Journal. The team is already hoping that the event will become a yearly fixture on Georgia’s tourist calendar, but government officials will be inspecting the ancient site before approving a second run.

The festival has pledged to protect the ruins, which began to undergo renovations in 2015, throughout the event, limiting tickets to 3,000 people and working in tandem with the country’s Department of Cultural Heritage.

Built in the 6th century A.D. in the village of Tsikhisdziri, Petra Fortress remains one of the most significant monuments on the entire eastern coast of the Black Sea, standing at the ancient crossroads of a route that once linked Georgia, Iran, and Armenia.
