An online workshop will show you how deepfakes work — and how to make your own

London-based Russian artist, Anna Engelhardt, is running an online workshop unravelling the mysteries of deepfake videos.

In the event for the LOA Gallery in London on 21 March, she’ll teach online visitors to create their own deepfakes — digitally-doctored clips where a person in an existing image or video is replaced with someone else’s likeness.

Engelhardt will also be speaking about the deepfake she created as part of her own work: a bogus press report on the construction of the Crimean bridge, a multi-billion dollar project to connect mainland Russia with the annexed Crimean peninsula.

“When the most grounded research comes from the independent activist groups, usually lacking affiliation with institutions that have the monopoly on objectivity, the notion of objectivity must be questioned,” Engelhardt says on her website.

Engeldardt was born in the Russian town of Kostroma, and works on politically-focused digital media projects, from disinformation to feminist politics in the post-Soviet space.
