Who: Russian electronic polymath Nina Kraviz has been on the forefront of the international techno scene for more than a decade now, both as a solo artist and as the founder of record label трип (pronounced trip), nurturing and promoting trailblazing experimental electronic music by both established producers and budding musicians from Russia and worldwide. Born in Irkutsk in Siberia, Kraviz moved to Moscow in the early 2000s for her studies, where she also got involved in the capital’s growing nightlife scene.
What: Electro-pop track This Time, first released on Kraviz’s Instagram account, explores the lyrical side of the artist, who is better known for her deliriously charged techno sets. Shot by techno producer Yonatan Baraki on an analogue Super 8 camera, the video follows Kraviz as she walks down the Miami Beach dressed in a simple black turtleneck bodysuit.
What they say: “I put my main focus on the arrangement and on the vocals to create a warm, yet sultry atmosphere that my favourite pop music is known for,” Nina Kraviz told Rave Jungle magazine.
Why you should watch: Kraviz’s first foray into music was fronting a three-piece electronic band called MySpaceRocket. The track sees Kraviz return to her origins as a singer and songwriter, offering a tender tribute to the seductive pop hits of the early 00s. With its faint static and grain, the shots of Kraviz against the backdrop of the turbulent sea give a nostalgic feel to the slow yet intoxicating dance hit, filled with its promise of excitement and romance.
