The sixth instalment of US horror franchise Final Destination is tipped to be filmed in Russia, Alexei Ryazantsev, CEO of Russian distribution company Karo Premiere has said. Speaking at the Window onto Europe film festival in Vyborg last week, Ryazantsev said his firm was negotiating the details with Warner Bros, Final Destination’s US distributor, and that the film had garnered considerable interest from foreign investors.

With all five films previously shot in the US or Canada, the change of filming location to Russian soil is thought to be linked with the success of the Final Destination franchise in the country. The fifth film grossed $19.3m in Russia in 2011 — approximately one-third of that in the US. Popularity of Hollywood films in Russia has been on the rise in recent years, with Russia one of the top markets for Hollywood’s recently-released space cowboy adventure Guardians of the Galaxy, which grossed $23.9 million in Russia.

Despite plans to shoot Final Destination 6 in Russia, the protagonists will be American, with the film following a group of teenagers who travel to Russia for a holiday. Consistent with Final Destination’s trademark plot, one of the teenagers in the films sees a vision of an imminent catastrophe, with each member of the group eventually killed.
