Fast food fanatics in Armenia have had their hopes raised as rumours fly about the possibility of McDonald’s opening an outlet in Yerevan.

According to local news site commersant.ge, Georgian businessman Temur Chkonia has obtained a licence to open McDonald’s in Armenia. Mr Chkonia, who is the director of Coca-Cola Bottlers Georgia Ltd., affirmed that a delegation from McDonald’s Georgia would soon visit Armenia to work out the next steps for the project, with construction due to start later this year on the initial 3 — 4 outlets planned.

However, McDonald’s Europe spokesperson Sanjay Mistry denies these rumours, telling newspaper Novosti-Armenia that McDonald’s had “no intention” to open restaurants in Armenia.

If McDonald’s were to open in Yerevan, Armenia would be following in the footsteps of its neighbours — the first McDonald’s outlet in the Caucasus opened in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, in 1999, while Azerbaijan got its first outlet later that same year.

Keep your eyes peeled for those Big Macs.
