Remote access: out on the fringes of St Petersburg, Kupchino is where the urban ends

St Petersburg-based photographer Alexander Bondar has been photographing the Kupchino district since 2008. Kupchino is the informal name of the Frunzenzky district in southern St Petersburg. Although reasonably close to the city centre, the district feels isolated, with an industrial area on its northern edge and railways surrounding it to the the east and west. "Dangerous", "ugly" and "remote" are the adjectives most frequently used to describe the area. “With these pictures I am trying to describe how I personally perceive life in the neighbourhood, but also life in a more general way," says Bondar. "I've never lived in Kupchino but I enjoy the feeling of riding the subway until the end of the line and taking a walk downtown by myself.”
