Point of view: electronic musician Ulrich Schnauss on the art and soul of the Russian countryside

It only took one trip to Russia for German-born electronic musician Ulrich Schnauss to fall in love with the country. That was in 2008 and since then, he’s lost count of the number of times he’s been back both for work and for play. This July, Schnauss travelled to Nikola-Lenivets, a village 200km from Moscow that’s famous for its large-scale landscape installations and land-art objects, to perform at the New Media Night Festival, a three-day event dedicated to digital art. Spread over 650 hectares of land, with installations from celebrated Russian architects such as Alexander Brodsky, the village has earned itself a reputation as one of Russia’s cultural hotspots with festivals organised throughout the year. We gave Schnauss a disposable camera and asked him to capture the spirit of Nikola-Lenivets, which he describes as one of “the most unusual places I've every played at”.
