Near dark: a photographer’s search for authenticity

In her recently published photo book, Nobody Knows Anything, Moscow-based artist and photographer Nadya Degtyareva, 27, reflects upon consumer culture and the relationship between art and society. “People try to build artificial lives and try not to feel.” says Degtyareva. “They avoid any possibility of living through pain, fear, birth and death … It’s a kind of self-preservation.” In this portfolio of images collected for The Calvert Journal, Degtyareva goes in pursuit of those musings, walking the line between the everyday and the uncanny, truth and fiction, day and night.
