Deri Dako’s hypnotic ambient LP explores the states between sickness and health

Who? Vilnius-based electronic producer Deri Dako, who released his debut album last year.

What? In his second album, Low Motor, Dako uses his signature industrial sounds to explore the idea of illness and health. Indeed, many of the LP’s 14 tracks are named after medical terms, including “Agnosia”, “Ataxia”, and “Neuroma”.

What they say: In 2013, Dako caught a debilitating virus while living in Malaysia. While the musician eventually recovered, doctors were never able to identify the illness. It’s an experience that Dako found himself coming back to amid the Covid-19 pandemic. “The unidentified virus tested my mental and physical boundaries and got me thinking about scenarios which we can and cannot control,” he says. “I wanted to understand these states of mind and body better and explore them in this album.”

Why you should listen: Blending field recordings, live instruments, and analog synths, this dark ambient LP creates a somber atmosphere, using machinery sonics, gongs, and low-frequency rumbles that transport the listener into a different dimension.
